West Fife Open-Cast Site Redevelopment

Summary Info.

Fife Council is in negotiations with Alba Resource Recovery (a subsidiary of Scottish Coal) over a proposal to redevelop the former open-cast site at Westfield near the village of Ballingry. The proposal would see the area turned into a recycling centre with nearby land used for landfill. The area surrounding the site has above average incidences of respiratory diseases as it is, the increased traffic which would be associated with such a development as proposed could be to the further detriment of local health.

Although FifeWest Action Group is not aligned with any political party, members of the SSP have been involved in this campaign since its inception. The campaigners have won support from local SNP and Labour MSPs in addition to massive support from across the region.

Mobile Phone Masts

Research into mobile phone masts is in its early stages. Many families are having to live next to the unsightly constructions. Some are experiencing health problems. Unlike mobile phones themselves, the people affected by masts do not have the freedom to simply not use them.

Health Issues In Fife
Health is a burning issue in Fife. The recent Right For Fife health consultation was specifically intended to seek public support for the centralisaton of acute services on a single site. When public opinion came out against centralisation, NHS Fife engaged on a 'divide and conquer' exercise forcing residents of East and Central Fife to resist services leaving the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, and residents of West Fife to fight for services at the Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline.
Privately Financed Schools
The Labour Government is intent on giving away public services to the private sector. This is being justified despite the fact that real investment using money borrowed by the Government would be cheaper than getting private firms to arrange their own finance. Meanwhile the same services cost more and offer less.
Asylum Seekers
The Scottish Socialist Party in Fife wholeheartedly support the work of Dignity For Asylum Seekers (Fife). For more information email digfas@hotmail.com
