Dump Protesters Picket Councillors’ Site Tour

FifeWest Action Group Press Release 14th June 2002
Councillors from Fife Council’s Planning Committee were greeted by demonstrators when they attended a guided tour of the controversial Westfield former open-cast mine near Ballingry this afternoon.

Around a dozen protesters, who had yesterday symbolically dumped rubbish outside Fife Council’s HQ in Glenrothes attempted to speak to the councillors as they arrived, with limited success.

Jane Ann Liston, councillor for St Andrews South East spent twenty minutes sharing the shelter of a horse-box with the demonstrators. Only then did she realise who the demonstrators were and what they were there for, and made her apologies, adding that she could not comment on the issue or she would risk being barred from the Council vote.

Jane Turnbull, one of the organisers said afterwards,
"I think it’s disgraceful that the developers can have a chance to influence councillors in this way, yet Jane Ann Liston was not allowed to talk to the people who pay her wages. My only hope is that the councillors take up our invitation to listen to our side of the story on 27th June."

The special conference is to be held in the Lochore Miners Welfare Institute at 7pm on 27th June 2002.
