Afghan Civilian Dead Outnumber September 11th Victims

A report published by U.S. academic Professor Marc W. Herold Ph.D., M.B.A., B.Sc. puts the civilian death toll in Afghanistan at 3,767 to December 6th 2001. The report, "A Dossier on Civilian Victims of United States' Aerial Bombing of Afghanistan: A Comprehensive Accounting", makes use of eye-witness accounts as well as analysing U.S. media handling of the September 11 atrocities and events beyond this in Afghanistan.

"...the critical element remains the very low value put upon Afghan civilian lives by U.S. military planners and the political elite, as clearly revealed by U.S. willingness to bomb heavily populated regions."
- Excerpt from Abstract of Prof. Herold's Report

While Western media organisations gave only scant reports of Afghan casualties - usually prefixed with the phrase "according to Taleban claims" - Indian and Pakistani newspapers and television are publishing details of civilian deaths and injuries in much greater detail.

"The Times of India was mentioning over 300 civilian casualties and that the US-UK bombing action was in violation of Article 51 of the United Nations Charter allowing the use of force in self-defense..."
- Siddarth Varadarajan, "An Ignoble War," Times of India [October 15, 2001].
